Manchester United’s history

  • Remembering Munich

On 6 February 1958, the aircraft carrying United home after a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed in Munich. The disaster claimed 23 lives, including 8 Manchester United players. Among them was Duncan Edwards.

  • The Ferguson era

Alex Ferguson took charge on 6 November 1986. His work gradually built a team capable of sustained domestic and European success. In 1999, United won the league, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season. This treble added to a European history that had already included the club’s first European Cup in 1968. Further league titles followed in 2000 and 2001, completing three consecutive championship-winning seasons.

  • Successes and changes

United won the league again in 2007 and secured both the league and Champions League in 2008. The team continued to evolve under Alex Ferguson. Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid in 2009. Ferguson remained in charge until 2013, ending an era remembered for the development of young players, changing squads and repeated title challenges. His tenure included 13 Premier League titles and 2 Champions League victories.

After Ferguson retired in 2013, United went through successive managerial changes involving David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho. The club won the FA Cup under Van Gaal and the League Cup and Europa League under Mourinho. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer later led the team to the Europa League final in 2021. Jadon Sancho, Raphaël Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo joined that year, but the following campaign brought further changes. Erik ten Hag was appointed in April 2022 and began work after the season. United won the League Cup in 2022/23, then beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 2023/24. These years combined setbacks, rebuilding and cup successes.
