Sporting Clube de Portugal, often called Sporting CP or Sporting, is a Lisbon club whose history dates to 1906. Its green and white colours, lion emblem and sporting traditions connect generations of supporters in Portugal and beyond.

History of Sporting CP

Sporting CP was founded on 1 July 1906. José Alvalade was a central figure in its creation, with the support of his grandfather, the Visconde de Alvalade. The ambition to build a major sporting institution shaped the club’s development. Football became a central part of an identity that also embraces other sports.

The lion and the green and white colours are recognisable symbols of Sporting CP. The motto “Esforço, Dedicação, Devoção e Glória” expresses its values of effort, dedication, devotion and glory. These elements connect shirts from different eras with the supporters who wear them.

Estádio José Alvalade

Estádio José Alvalade is Sporting CP’s home in Lisbon. Its name honours one of the club’s founders and links the stadium to Sporting’s origins. For supporters, it is a meeting place where domestic and European matches become part of the club’s shared memory.

The stadium opened on 6 August 2003, when Sporting CP played Manchester United. It succeeded the club’s earlier ground and marked a new chapter in its matchday experience. The opening match remains closely associated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s time at Sporting.

In 2023, the club marked the stadium’s 20th anniversary with a commemorative shirt inspired by the kit from the opening era and associated with Cristiano Ronaldo. Distinguish that historical edition from other seasons and versions when choosing a product.

Honours and achievements

Sporting CP’s history includes domestic league and cup successes as well as important European campaigns. The club won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963/64 and reached the UEFA Cup final in 2005. It also took part in the first European Cup in 1955/56. These milestones connect different generations of players and supporters.

Players in Sporting CP’s history

Portuguese football has been shaped by figures such as Eusébio, whose career is closely associated with Benfica. Sporting CP has its own history of influential players, including Bruno Fernandes. His time at the club is remembered by supporters who followed his performances in green and white. Another central figure in Sporting’s story is Cristiano Ronaldo. His development at Sporting preceded his move to Manchester United in 2003. Shirts connected with his early career recall the years before his international fame and the role of the Lisbon club in his football journey.
