Players in Dutch football history

Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong is associated with midfield control, carrying the ball and linking defence with attack. His Netherlands shirts belong to a later chapter of the team’s history than the retro editions of earlier generations. His club career included Ajax before a move to Barcelona in 2019. That progression forms part of his development as a player, alongside his appearances for the national team. Johan Cruyff, Robin van Persie and Virgil van Dijk represent different generations of Dutch football. Their positions and styles of play differ, offering supporters several eras to explore through the national team’s shirts.

The European champions of 1988 were coached by Rinus Michels. Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman and Marco van Basten were among the players in that squad. Their triumph gave the orange shirt a lasting association with one of the country’s most celebrated tournaments.

Early generations of the Dutch national team

The federation’s origins date to 1889, while the national team played its first international match in 1905. Early Dutch football included figures such as Bok de Korver and Harry Denis, followed by Puck van Heel, Kick Smit and Beb Bakhuys. Later names such as Abe Lenstra, Faas Wilkes, Kees Rijvers and Cor van der Hart belong to the years before the teams best known to many modern supporters. The Netherlands also won Olympic bronze in 1908, 1912 and 1920, showing that its international history extends well beyond the era of Total Football.

Memorable World Cup campaigns
